Melbourne is a spectacular city in the heart of Victoria, Australia. Melbourne is such a fun and energetic city that is filled with life and culture. You will never be bored if you visit Melbourne. There are hundreds of things you can do in Melbourne for a day but here is how to have a perfect and simple day in Melbourne:
Melbourne Botanic Gardens
Now I am not usually one for exploring gardens while traveling but the Melbourne Botanic Gardens are insanely beautiful. Start your day off by visiting the botanic gardens. Its perfect for a day of escaping the hustle and bustle of Melbourne city life. Strolling through the gardens and looking at the variety of plant life from around the world will leave you amazed and at peace. Going on a sunny day and having a picnic in the park is highly suggested; however, there are several cafes in the gardens for you to enjoy as well. Also what makes this activity really great is that its completely free access to the gardens.
Next up, wander around the city and go rooftop bar hopping. Even if you don't want to start day drinking, its still a perfect activity to get amazing city views of Melbourne for free. Plus the atmosphere of some rooftop bars are incredible. There are rooftop cinemas, rooftop lounges, rooftop gardens, theres so much to do at the top of the city. Plus the views will be unforgettable.
Eat Ethiopian Cuisine at Saba's Restaurant
Before arriving in the city, I was unaware of how popular Ethiopian cuisine was in Melbourne. Ethiopian food can be found all over the city and they are very highly rated restaurants. However, my favourite Ethiopian restaurant in Melbourne (which I cannot defend as the best because this was my first Ethiopian food experience and the only Ethiopian restaurant I tried in Melbourne) but it was still amazing. The staff was genuine and helpful for giving you a great experience. If you never have had Ethiopian food, then they will gladly make suggestions and explain the process. This restaurant is also vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free friendly. Also you must try the St. George Lager, which is a really good Ethiopian beer they offer at this restaurant. Lastly, this restaurant is very nicely priced ($$). For the average backpacker it may be a little out of budget but it is definitely worth the experience. I am no food critic but I would definitely give 5 stars (★★★★★) to Saba's.
Melbourne Star Observation Wheel
To end the night, enjoy amazing views at the Melbourne Star. If you have been on the London Eye in the United Kingdom, then this will be somewhat of deja vu experience for you because this is Melbourne's take on it: the Melbourne Star. The Melbourne Star is perfect for getting panoramic views of Melbourne city and Port Phillip Bay. Although this observation wheel gives you great views in the daytime, I suggest to go on the last run of the night. 9:30PM is the last boarding time for the Melbourne Star and if you're lucky like I was, you may get a whole observation deck to yourself for the ride. It's perfect for just sitting back and relaxing while watching the city light up the night sky.
Now if you feel the need to extend your perfect day into a perfect night, then you can head back into the city and continue your rooftop bar hopping or experience other parts of Melbourne's extraordinary nightlife.
Enjoy your time in Melbourne, Australia and explore the many other activities and parts of the city to receive all that Melbourne has to offer.
