Isn't it expensive to fly? How can I fly through Europe on a budget?
I get told constantly that travelling is:
EXPENSIVE A LUXURY UNREALISTIC DIFFICULT
However, these are not factual excuses for not travelling. If you budget and know the right ways to book your flights, accommodation, etc. then you can travel insanely cheap. I have travelled to many places by spending less than £40.00 ($60.00). Though to travel cheap you have to live with basic needs which means...
NO FIRST CLASS
NO INFLIGHT SERVICES
AVOIDING ADDITIONAL AIRLINE FEES
The best budget airlines for European travel are Ryanair and Easyjet. Ryanair even offers flights starting from £1 ($1.50). Regularly flights start around £9.99 ($15.00) for a one-way ticket but Ryanair is really big on sales which can drop prices to evening be less than £1 ($1.50). Although this may sound like a scam or completely impossible to receive flights for such little money, it is completely CHEAP, NON-LUXURIOUS, REALISTIC, EASY, NON-LUXURIOUS. Emphasis on the non-luxurious.
To keep the prices low on Ryanair you must not get caught up in the extra charges. Budget airlines as such like to cut the prices down on flights so they can charge you on absolutely everything else. For example, baggage fees. BRING A CARRY-ON BAG. If your bag is larger than 55x40x20cm, then you will be charged £50.00 ($73.00). Also if your bag weighs over 10KG you will be charged the same rates. Pack light and take as little as possible. Ryanair does allow you to have a carry on bag that weighs less than 10KG and that is smaller than 55x40x20cm along with a backpack or small shoulder bag. Additionally, Ryanair does not offer free inflight snacks/drinks; you have to pay extra to pick your seat; and you must pay extra if you are bringing baby equipments, sporting equipment, or musical instruments. Lastly there is a small fee if you use a credit card and not a debit card. Flying on Ryanair may not be the most luxurious flying experience but as long as you are aware of the additional fees and avoid them you can fly for as cheap as 55x40x20cm £2.00 ($3.00) round-trip or less.
Ryanair Destinations by Country:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom (including: Northern Ireland, England, Wales, and Scotland).
Easyjet is also really cheap as well but I prefer to fly on Ryanair because they tend to have the better discounts. However it depends on the time and season you are trying to fly. The best tool to use to find the cheapest flight for any given date to anywhere in the world is skyscanner.net. Skyscanner allows you to look at every flight to a destination that is offered on the days you would like to fly and organises them by the cheapest to most expensive flight. My favourite feature of skyscanner is that you can enter your departure city and then for the destination you can enter "flexible?" and then put the dates you would like to travel and then it will give you the cheapest destinations to fly to on your chosen dates. Skyscanner is a great tool to use for finding the cheapest flights.
